MetroFuture Population, Housing, and Employment Projections
clear

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) has published two sets of population, housing unit, and employment projections as part of the MetroFuture regional planning process. These projections were created for the 101 cities and towns within the MAPC region, as well as 63 additional communities in eastern Massachusetts.

The "Current Trends" projection estimates the number of people, housing units, and jobs likely to exist in each municipality if current patterns of growth and development continued to 2030.The "MetroFuture" projection estimates the number of people and jobs for each of the 164 communities if the recommendations contained in the MetroFuture plan are followed. MetroFuture envisions great changes in the region’s development patterns: under MetroFuture, more growth is directed to areas that are already developed, such as town centers and urban areas, and as a result, less open space will be developed and local business districts will be revitalized.

Local communities can use these numbers in a variety of ways, including as a way to estimate likely traffic and water impacts over time, and to help communities to plan for where and how to site development. These projections have been used by a variety of state and local agencies for transportation, environmental, and land use policy and planning.

For more information on the creation of these projections see this webpage, download the methodology used for the Current Trends projections, or contact the MAPC Data Services Group.

Use the DataMap Tool to access the following datasets:

Layer contains estimated number of acres of buildable land in 2030, excluding wetlands, under Current Trends and MetroFuture, by municipality.

Layer contains 2030 employment projections by sector under Current Trends and MetroFuture. The employment sectors in the layer are: basic (construction, manufacturing, warehousing, wholesale trade, etc.), retail (retail trade, hospitality, and food service), and service (education, health, finance, information, arts, etc.) Estimates are presented by municipality and by Traffic Analysis Zone (TAZs).

This layer contains projections of housing unit development from 2000 – 2030, by housing type, for Current Trends and MetroFuture. Housing types included are single family homes (three types: one acre, half acre, and quarter acre lots); 2-4 unit multifamily homes and townhouses; small, medium, and large apartment buildings (6 – 19 units, 20-50 units, and 50+ units, respectively); and accessory apartments or conversion of single family homes to multifamily homes. Estimates are presented by municipality and by Traffic Analysis Zones (TAZs).

This layer includes year 2030 projections and percent change from 2000-2030 for population, housing units, and unemployment for both Current Trends and MetroFuture.

This layer contains 2030 population projections by age group by municipality. The age groups are 0-4 years, 5-19 years, 20-64 years, and 65 and over.
