MetroBoston DataCommon user trainings are held every month at offices of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council in downtown Boston. Attendees include town planners, government employees, staff from non-profit organizations and private research organizations, and others. Participants receive an orientation to the various components of the website, and complete a hands-on tutorial of the DataMap Tool to create their own customized maps.

The two hour session will include:
  • quickly access statistics about your city or town;
  • conduct analysis with social and economic data;
  • customize your own maps;
  • print-out maps or email maps.

In this demonstration analysis, a housing advocate uses Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data to identify metropolitan Boston neighborhoods with a high proportion of subprime loans. After viewing the available data, they complete an analysis to locate neighborhoods with both a high proportion of loans to women and also a high number of subprime loans.

There is an inner city urban outreach program that does work with specifically young children. They are looking for areas in the city with a high population of families with children under the age of six. The urban outreach program is seeking to coordinate their efforts with arts and cultural programs in these areas. They are hoping to find programs that specifically cater to children's activites.
